Ruth is an experienced teacher of flute, piano, vocal studies and violin. She has been teaching alongside her performing career for over 35 years and specialises in intermediate and advanced tuition and adult returners.  She works from studios in London, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxford, Dorset, Bath and Cambridge as well as online. In the holidays she runs workshops, concerts and masterclasses.

Many of Ruth's private students aspire to become professional musicians and so many are post grade 8 students. She offers diploma level tuition and courses to teachers. However she also enjoys teaching adults and children who want to learn just for fun and relaxation and she teaches classical – rock, pop, modern classics and folk styles.

Current prices for online lessons are £18 for 30 mins up to grade 8. Ruth spends time outside the weekly lesson times to produce materials, mark work and provide feedback to students and online lessons are supplemented with group work in the holidays.

Ruth has also been successfully teaching worldwide online for 8 years and has students in Canada, the USA and France. 'Online learning can be as good or even better that in person learning. Research has shown that students in online learning performed better than those receiving face to face instruction, but it has to be done right' - Dr Greenhow Professor of Educational Psychology, Michigan State University; 2018 Recipient of Michigan\state's Teacher/Scholar award (posted 6/22/202).

All students achieve high marks for their examinations and there is no discernable difference in results between online and face to face learning. During the 2020/2021 UK lockdowns, all her students achieved distinction for their digital submissions to ABRSM and to Trinity examination boards.

Face to Face (in person teaching) must follow government covid guidelines in order for insurance compliance and professional registration for flute and singing. You can find information on the on going risk assessments that private teachers are now required to undertake before and after every lesson online. For face to face tuition, fees are higher because of the increased cost of equipment (screens etc) and time spend filling in forms/disinfecting surfaces etc. Fees are currently £20 per 30 mins currently but these fees are under review.
